ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 9 – CREATING A QUICK COMPOSITE IMAGE

A PRESCRIPTION FOR USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 9
A QUICK COMPOSITE IMAGE

When one is working with Photoshop layers, there are times when you would like to apply an effect to a composite of a layered image. One could flatten the image (after first saving it as a .psd image or .tiff image) but there is a better way. Select the current top layer in your Layers Stack. Then press Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt + Shift + E and a composite is produced on its own layer at the top of the stack.. One can then apply an effect on this layer or you can copy the composite image to a new file. Since this composite is on its own layer it can easily be removed or made invisible.

While this tip applies to Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. It will work with some of the earlier versions of Elements.

Also:

Crtl/Cmd means Control Key on Windows, the Command Key on the Mac.

And

Alt/Op means the Alt key on Windows and the Option Key on the Mac.

Documenting America from the Great Depression to World War II

http://rs6.loc.gov/fsowhome.html

“The images in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection are among the most famous documentary photographs ever produced. Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. In the early years, the project emphasized rural life and the negative impact of the Great Depression, farm mechanization, and the Dust Bowl. In later years, the photographers turned their attention to the mobilization effort for World War II. The core of the collection consists of about 164,000 black-and-white photographs. This release provides access to over 160,000 of these images; future additions will expand the black-and-white offering. The FSA-OWI photographers also produced about 1600 color photographs during the latter days of the project. ”

“The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library’s National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. ”

“The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers. ”

Visiting this site should be an inspiration as well as a lesson in documentary photography. Many great photographers of the 1930’s era worked for the United States Government. Photographers like Walker Evans and Ansel Adams are among those represented. And anyone with a knowledge of photographic history will recognize “Migrant Mother.” And, if you wish, download a high resolution file and print your own personal copy of this photograph or of many others.

Seeing Now: Photography Since 1960 at BMA

Through May 15th the Baltimore Museum of Art is offering an outstanding exhibit of the last fifty years of photographic art from their permanent collection. Quoting from their website:

“More than 200 provocative and compelling images showcase photography’s extraordinary development since 1960 in this gripping exhibition of moving and at times frank subjects. Seeing Now offers a striking snapshot of the world around us as seen through the eyes of more than 60 photographers—including Diane Arbus, William Eggleston, Gary Winogrand, and Cindy Sherman.

“Through single photographs, works in series, film, and video, the exhibition reveals the astonishing breadth and depth of the BMA’s outstanding photography collection and presents many recent acquisitions being shown at the museum for the first time. Explore sub-cultures and expressions of the human form; natural and man-made environments; ephemeral performances and artistic projects; and the role of light and time in photography.”

While there I recommend taking the opportunity to dine at Gertrude’s, their outstanding on-site restaurant (where reservations are always a good idea.)

SPAM-A-LOT

Over just the past week I decided to record all the spam that came to my blog here at the Lancaster Camera Club website, http://LancasterCameraClub.org.  With my apologies to anyone whose comment was legitimate, I was impressed with many things about the spam.  Most of these folks need a spell checker and a grammar checker.  Clearly many comments come from folks marketuing their favorite drug – cialis – Who needs it? or ladies who are willing to date me – I assume for a fee – But how much are they willing to pay me?  That is the question.  I needed to brush up on my Polish language to translate one comment (see comment and translation below if you are really interested) but I am glad that through the wonders of the Internet (invented, as we all know, by the former Vice-President of the United Staters, Al – I won the Nobel Prize – Gore, that I am reaching a world-wide audience.

I can’t really suggest that you, the reader, spend much time reading and appreciating the many laudatory comments (hey, this was an opportunity to post them), but you should appfreciate the volume – and this was just for a week.  I wish old Al had invented an automatic spam filter to go with his Internet thingy.  Now that would have really lessened world-wide pollution.  The life of a blogger is not always easy.

So enough, unless there is a huge demand from an adoring public, I am back to posting photyography related material.  I hope everyone had a great Easter, that your Easter Baskets were filled with goodies, and you were able to end Lent with a celebratory meal.

“A PRESCRIPTION FOR NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Solo Photo Book Month 2011

Ever wanted to create a book of your images and have it published where anyone can view it? Well, grab your camera and get inspired. Solo Photo Book Month 2011 gives you the opportunity to do just that. It starts at the beginning of July and we’d love to have you join in to make your photo book in a month. Since 2008 hundreds of photographers have published over 350 books of their photography on the SoFoBoMo website. You are invited to join them this year. There is no charge to partcipate.

A lot of photographers have considered doing a book, but various concerns have stopped them. Heck, the same concerns stopped us. We worried that our photos weren’t good enough. We worried that we didn’t have enough photos. We worried that we couldn’t write decent text, or couldn’t do a decent job of layout, or that we didn’t have the time to do a good job.

SoFoBoMo gives us (and you) an end run around those fears. There’s no requirement that the photos be good (but we suspect you’ll be surprised by how good yours are if you participate.) There’s no requirement to have any text at all. And there is no requirement on quality of layout.

The requirements for SoFoBoMo 2011 are simple. Your book must:
– include at least 35 photos;
– be completed in a contiguous stretch of 31 days, start to finish, during July and August of 2011; and
– take the form of a PDF file, which can be uploaded to the SoFoBoMo website.

Visit the SoFoBoMo website to learn more, view past years’ books, and join in this year’s activities.
